Hello! I hope everyone is doing great. Here is an important topic I think everyone should read.
So you go online looking for love? You aren’t alone. Millions of people across the world go on the internet to find love, intimacy, or even a soul mate. Due to sheer volume this makes it easy for scammers and criminals to move in and potentially take lots of money. You may think you aren’t going to ever fall for these scams.. but remember these people are usually highly sophisticated. They will playing with your emotions, acting genuinely interested, and will eventually find they prey. It’s a numbers game. Make sure they don’t find yours.
A lot of scams exist and it’s impossible for me to cover them all in a blog post. This page has a great deal of them. Brush up! http://www.romancescams.org/TypesOfScams.html
I will be going over typical warning signs and ways you can avoid getting scammed. A lot of criminals are looking to social media to accomplish their goals, since people usually reveal information they can use. In some instances criminals will draft a profile similar to your interests and lure you in.
Some common warning signs you may not know:
✔Recently joined the dating site / social media? Not a home run, but you may want to look into it further.
✔Almost instantly wants to move from the website you met to a personalized email.
✔Make sure they aren’t using someone else’s picture. Use a Google image search. Drag the photo onto the search bar, and they will do the rest.
✔Number of friends. Maybe they are a loner.. but someone who joined a week ago with 5 friends usually indicates they made multiple accounts and befriended them. You may want to look into their friends if the option is available.
✔Always seem to miss face to face meetings. How many excuses can someone have? Especially for someone they “love”
Now the obvious. Never wire or send someone money you haven’t met in real life. These people will be establishing rapport for days, weeks, or even months. They won’t try anything until they have the right vibes. They will likely have a great excuse. They were hospitalized, a relative died, they owe money, they were a crime victim. Whatever the reason – don’t fall for it.
What are some ways to avoid getting scammed?
✔Use reputable dating websites, preferably ones that require money or a subscription
✔Do your research
✔Meet them in real life AKA stay local.
✔Don’t reveal any personal information. Remember, identity theft is still prevalent in today’s society.
✔Keep communication on the site you met them on. Are they pushing email? They may be trying to compromise your computer.
